Announcements On August 8,2008 Lou LaCava spoke at the 2008 FPIC/APAC Defense Counsel conference in Orlando Florida. The presentation entitled, "The Anatomy of the Large Medical Malpractice Verdict" was presented to Defense Lawyers from around the state of Florida. July 2008 - Lou LaCava and Malinda Lugo presented a seminar for a graduating class of Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioners at USF in Tampa, Florida. The seminar covered the current state of medical malpractice litigation, the litigation experience for a defendant and things a practicing health care provider can do to avoid litigation. June 2008 - The firm offers its congratulations to Lou LaCava, Jonathon Lynn, Robert Klein, Ilisa Hoffman and Keith Puya, for being selected this year as Florida's Super Lawyers. Only 5% of Florida attorneys are selected as Florida Super Lawyers. They are selected through an extensive process of balloting, blue ribbon panel review and independent research. Their names were listed in Florida Super Lawyers, seen by more than 160,000 readers and subscribers in a special advertising supplement to the Miami Herald published in June 2008. They will also be listed in the Florida Super Lawyers magazine distributed nationwide to the lead corporate counsel of the Russell 3000 companies and ABA-approved law school libraries as well as listed on www.superlawyers.com, where only the top attorneys nationwide appear by name, city and practice area. June 2008 - Congratulations to our partner, Ilisa Hoffman, who was named by her peers as one of the "Top 50 Woman Lawyers for 2008". April 2008 - Lou Lacava was a guest speaker at the Pro Assurance Risk Management Seminar for physicians in Sarasota. The seminar entitled, From the Exam Room to the Courtroom focused on physician to patient and physician to physician communication as well as other risk management issues. On May 1, 2008 the seminar was also presented to physicians in Pinellas County. April 2008 - Stephens Lynn Klein LaCava Hoffman and Puya attorneys receive "Hero" recognition for trial results. March 2008 - Rob Klein, a partner in the Miami office, was a panelist and speaker before the Spellman-Hoevler Inn of Court, along with plaintiff's attorney Warren Trazenfeld, addressing current theories of liability in legal malpractice actions. Mr. Klein and Mr. Trazenfeld presented opposing perspectives concerning potential theories of liability, evolving defenses and the status of more recent theories of attorney liability, including claims brought by way of third party assignment. November - 2007- Bonnie M. Mitchell has joined the West Palm Beach office of Stephens, Lynn, Klein, LaCava, Hoffman & Puya, P.A. as an associate. Ms. Mitchell will work in the firm's professional liability and insurance litigation division. November 2007 - Jenny L. October 2007- Jonathon Lynn and Robert M. September 2007 - Lou LaCava and Karen L. Mallin presented a seminar for the physicians at Emergency Medical Associates of Florida. Lou and Karen spoke on Statutory Tort Reform in Florida and updated the physicians regarding issues concerning the Department of Health.
August 2007 - Lou LaCava was a guest speaker at the First Professionals Insurance Company, Inc and Anesthesiologists Professional Assurance Company 2007 Defense Counsel meeting. He spoke on Litigation Issues and Strategies from Notice of Intent to Trial.

May 1, 2007- Lou LaCava was a guest speaker at a Pro Assurance risk management seminar for Pinellas County physicians. Mr. LaCava discussed medical record documentation and differential diagnoses relative to the defense of a medical malpractice case. On May 17, 2007 Mr. LaCava spoke on the same subject matter for physicians in Sarasota, Florida.
May 2007 - Congratulations to Roberta Mandel for her uncontested re-election to serve on the Board of Directors of the Miami-Dade Chapter of the Florida Association of Women Lawyers.
March 2007 - An article "Understanding the Art of Appellate Advocacy," written by Roberta Mandel, was published in The Florida Bar Journal. The article deals with the fact that appellate litigation is a discrete and complicated area of litigation and that trial counsel should seriously consider hiring appellate counsel to handle their cases on appeal.
February 21, 2007- Miami partner Sherryll Martens Dunaj was the guest speaker at the Lorman seminar. She spoke on the subject of Taking & Defending Effective Depositions in Florida. Her subtopic was preparing witnesses for deposition.
January 2007 - The firm is pleased to announce that Houston S. Park of the firm's West Palm Beach office has become a shareholder with the firm. Roberta Mandel, Maria Vidakis (Miami office) and Jason Azzarone (Tampa office) have become partners with the firm.
November 2006 - Michael Burt, a partner in the Palm Beach office, has been awarded board certification status by the Florida Bar in the area of Civil Trial Law. Board certification is the highest level of recognition given by The Florida Bar for competency and experience within an area of law.
October 2006 - Robert M. Klein, Bob Cousins, Andrew Tharp and Greg Glasser presented a seminar on legal malpractice issues to the Broward County Bar Association as part of the BCBA's CLE program. The seminar, moderated by Mr. Cousins, focused on risk management and the defense of legal malpractice claims.
October 2006 - Geralyn Passaro, a partner in the Fort Lauderdale office, recently published an article, "Claims of Exploitation of the Elderly in the Sale of Financial Products", in the Florida Bar Journal. For more details, contact our Ft. Lauderdale office.
September 2006- Lou LaCava was selected by his peers to be included in the 2007 edition of Best Lawyers in America in the specialty of Medical Malpractice Law. According to Best Lawyers, inclusion in the publication is based on an exhaustive and rigorous peer-review survey.
August 2006 - Lou La Cava was a guest speaker at Ophthalmic Mutual Insurance Company's nationwide risk management audio conference. Mr. La Cava discussed the legal issues in a case involving a delay in treatment of diabetic retinopathy resulting in total blindness. The case included issues concerning co-management of a patient between an ophthalmologist and optometrist, medical record documentation and patient follow-up.
July 2006 - Jonathon Lynn, Ilisa W. Hoffman and Gregory S. Glasser were recently recognized by Florida Trend's Legal Elite for 2006. They join Robert Klein as part of a prestigious group of lawyers recognized for their excellence in civil trial practice. The "Legal Elite" represent the top 1.7% of the 56,513 Florida Bar members who practice in the state. This is quite an honor and we are proud to have multiple members of the firm named to the this distinguished group of lawyers.
June 2006 - Lou LaCava, Jonathon Lynn, Robert Klein, and Ilisa Hoffman have been selected as Florida's Super Lawyers. Only 5% of Florida attorneys are selected as Florida Super Lawyers. Forty-four thousand ballots were sent to Florida Lawyers to nominate the best lawyers they personally observed in action. The publishers of Law and Politics then researched each candidate evaluating indicators of peer recognition and professional achievement. The candidates are then evaluated by a blue ribbon panel of preeminent peers in the practice area of each attorney to make the final selection.
June 2006 - Lou LaCava was a guest speaker at the Pro Assurance Risk Management seminar which took place at the Hyatt Sarasota. physicians practicing in Pinellas and Hillsborough County. April 2006 - Congratulations to Jonathon Lynn for his unanimous nomination as "Trial Lawyer of the Year" by the South Florida chapter of the American Board of Trial Advocates. ABOTA is a national group of experienced trial attorneys who nominate their peers for membership. All advocates nominated must have at least fifty jury trials. It is a tremendous honor to be nominated by Florida's best trial attorneys as the "Trial Lawyer of the Year." We are extremely proud of Jon's success and recognition by his peers for his accomplishments. April 2006 - Congratulations to Jay Azzarone and Diane Zuckerman for winning the Petition for Writ of Certiorari in the Second District Court of Appeal, which is relevant to NICA cases. On March 21, 2006, Keith Puya gave a presentation at the ProAssurance Smooth Sailing Seminar to a large group of Palm Beach County physicians on the topics of Standard of Care and preparing for a deposition. On February 16, 2006, Jason Azzarone of the firm's Tampa office was the guest speaker at a seminar sponsored by West Coast Claims Association. Mr. Azzarone spoke on the topic of automobile negligence.
